If this time of spiritual reflection is spoilt by headaches, take the following advice from headache specialist Dr Elliot Shevel to heart.
Take action:
To prevent caffeine-withdrawal headache,
- Reduce caffeine consumption in the weeks preceding the month of Ramadan and drink a cup of strong coffee just before the start of the fast (sahur) for the day;
- Eat a meal with a low sugar content before the fast to prevent a sudden spike and subsequent drop in blood sugar levels;
- Drink enough fluid before the onset of the fast to prevent dehydration;
- Try to avoid stress;
- Get enough sleep.
